The First Greenhouse – 2003 Season

poly1We are currently growing vegetable plants in two greenhouses. One is a traditional glass greenhouse, This is in my parents garden. The other greenhouse in our own garden is a new polycarbonate plastic one.

The reason we have this type is because we live near a playing field and we didn’t like the thought of a football smashing the glass every other week, Also we have two young children who play near the greenhouse.

A consequence of having two different types is that we can find out which plants appear to like growing inside different types of greenhouses.

Inside the glass greenhouse it gets very hot as it get’s full sunlight, Whereas the plastic greenhouse keeps relatively cool and due to the polycarbonate the sunlight is diffused.

On this page you can see details of the plastic greenhouse we have in our garden, And the different types of hydroponics systems we are using within it.

over1After trying different configurations of plants, We are now concentrating this greenhouse on mostly cucumber production as they seem to prefer growing in the slightly cooler diffused light. (Although this seems to contradict certain books I’ve read on this), We do though have one tomato plant and a Aubergine plant growing inside.

The green house consists of two main NFT channels along each side, Nutrient solution from a holding tank is pumped up to the first channel on the left hand side of the greenhouse. This then flows past the roots of the plants and falls into a piece of guttering at the end of the greenhouse. This then flows across into the second NFT channel where it flows back down into the holding tank.

The Second Greenhouse – 2003 Season

glass1Within the glass greenhouse at my parents house, we are growing other plants which we have found to like this environment (ie. hot and bright), These currently consist of Watercress, Peppers, Tomatoes and Lettuces.

For young plants we usually hang some old sheets on the greenhouse to give them some shade from the sun, Also usually the vent is left open on this greenhouse.

On this page you can see details of this glass greenhouse and the different types of hydroponics systems we are using within it.

glasslThe main NFT system here is slightly different than the other greenhouse.

Here we have three NFT channels in place, One main one which you can see here on the left hand side and two smaller ones on the right hand side, A photo of these channels is shown below.

glassrThe right two channels in the greenhouse are shown in the photo to the right, Both these channels are made from strips of square guttering bought from a DIY store.

In the NFT setup we have in this greenhouse we pump the nutrient solution from the holding tank at the far end of the greenhouse to all three NFT channels via a small T piece, The solution then simply flows back into the holding tank as before. You can see the holding tank in the photo above, It’s the green tank at the far end.

Having the channels all flowing downhill the same allows us to place the channels slightly lower giving the plants more room to grow upwards, A lack of headroom is a problem were having in the other plastic greenhouse.
